Introduction to the Nine Great Nations
The Nine Great Nations, founded in ancient times, have been united throughout recorded history, bound by a common enemy, ancient prophecy, and even more ancient magic. The Khwol, a mysterious race of chaos-driven, violent plane-shifting demons, plague the lands with the constant threat of attack. Their ability to materialize from thin air, slaughter their victims, and then disappear as suddenly as they appeared has driven the progress of civilization to the near brink of non-existence.
The ancients, in their wisdom, knew that for the mortal races of the cotenant to survive, they would have to work together, pooling all resources. However, the ancients also realized that the vastness of the lands was far to great to be governed by any single individual. Their solution to this was to divide the cotenant into Nine Great Nations, bound in oath to support and protect one another. To keep this oath through the eons, they created the nine receptacles — Nine weapons of great power, instilled with the wisdom and essence of the ancients themselves. The nine receptacles not only choose who will rule from each generation of the ruling houses of the Nine Nations, but also act as a unifying factor, binding these “Birthrights” in person as well as purpose.
For over three thousand years, the nine receptacles have sustained order throughout the Nine Nations, and the people of the lands have stood firm against the invading Khwol — though not without heavy losses.
In this unique environment, where the need of the many far outweigh the disagreements of the few, society struggles to maintain dignity and hope. Led by the nine great houses of the Nine Great Nations, and guided by the wisdom and power of the nine receptacles, mortal kin continues this struggle today.
This is the story of the 85th generation of Birthrights, and their struggle and rise to greatness in what turns out to be one of the darkest decades in the history of the Nine Nations. The hopes of all ride on the leaders and their heirs, and never more so than now in the Years of the Third Black Sun.
